Azerbaijan didn’t yet have a gymnastics program following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, so the Azeri gymnast Valery Belenky competed as an unattached Azeri athlete at worlds in 1993. With no plans to create a program at that time, he opted to become a German citizen and began representing Germany in 1994. |
